Each of us has a specific style. Our individual styles are reflected in many things; the clothes we wear, the way we have decorated our homes. The list goes on and on. What I want to discuss over the course of several articles is how to let your own personal preferences shine through in your backyard space. The area outside the four walls of home is just as important as what is on the inside, really. The backyard is a place that is unique, with all the wonderful qualities of nature surrounding you. Not all of us are blessed with acreage, and must live within close proximity to our neighbors. So how can we create an area, an oasis, if you will, of our own? Let’s see what we can do with the help of some outdoor wicker furniture.

Consider the ever popular tropical theme in landscaping. Stay with me here, don’t write this one off as over done and out of date just yet. See past cheesy cantina lights dangling from the patio cover. If you do, you may just find the new décor for your private “island getaway”. Let’s look at how a specific design of wicker furniture and some simple changes to the landscape can assist you in turning an open space into a true paradise.

Start by imagining. Seriously. Close your eyes, and envision what you would do in an outdoor room surrounded by the fragrances of jasmine and honeysuckle. What would you do underneath the shade of a large Tiki Umbrella? Would you sit back in the deep cushioned seats of a settee or sofa, or would you dine by the light of a candelabrum on a breezeless evening? This will help you to know what furniture you need to place on the patio first. If there’s room, or you have two separate hardscape areas, you could make one dining “room” and one lounging area with no problem at all. But let’s stick with something simple for the sake of time.

Let’s say you need a place to dine. First, set the scene by placing 6-8 Tiki Torches strategically around the patio area. You can find torches with Citronella that will have the added benefit of keeping bugs away on warm summer nights. Now, consider a nice round wicker dining table in a size of approximately 48″, perfect for seating 4 people. Resin wicker is versatile and comes in a number of colors, but I would suggest sticking with the Antique Wash, a natural brown hue. This will keep with a natural ambience and let the weave look like the real thing, yet keep you away from having to spend hours maintaining real wood furniture. Add matching chairs, with rounded backs and an open weave across the back, ending in a tight weave around the borders. Chairs that feature balled feet lend elegance to an already upscale environment. Because the frames of the table and chairs will be a neutral shade, you can add a splash of color through the chairs cushions. Cushions for outdoor wicker furniture are super cozy and they will also be weather resistant and easy to care for. Most sets will include cushions for the chairs.

If the table you purchase has an umbrella hole, such as the Pinehurst Dining Table from NCI, then consider adding a nice Tiki Umbrella with a thatched cover to give shade and also ramp up the décor of the theme. There are choices on this front too, such as pole type. You can choose a bamboo pole, wood pole, or aluminum, depending on your needs. There are also options for a pole that tilts, giving you ample versatility in shading. For some, going as far as living with a thatched umbrella may be just too much. So an alternative for these people could be to use a patio umbrella with a wood pole, tropical wood, of course, and add lights to it. Lights created specifically for outdoor umbrellas offer a subtle glow that follows each rib of the umbrella itself, truly exquisite and wonderful, setting just the right mood.

If you have a patio cover and do not need an umbrella, then you can enhance the theme by adding some bamboo screens or fencing around the perimeter of your yard. Or for function and embellishment, place an outdoor wicker storage trunk in a place where it can be of use while still adding to the look of the patio.

Throw in some wonderful smelling Night Blooming Jasmine, some Birds of Paradise, or a few small Palms, and you have more than enough to get this decorating theme off the ground. You will have a backyard setting that is calming and conducive to peace and tranquility for you and your family. Not to mention you will also have a backyard like no other on the block!

The timelessness of wicker lawn furniture can be used to accommodate many different decorating themes, and it does so just beautifully. The wicker on the market today, like that made by NCI, is made of synthetic materials, meaning that it will be resistant to fading and scratching, and most definitely will not peel, crack and rot like the wicker of old. Today’s wicker requires little more than a good hosing down every now and again, an easy task even for the busy homeowner. This means that you get to focus on learning how to make the perfect tropical drink with which to wow your friends!
